Help! Why does my bicycle gears shift by itself?

I bought this bicycle with 18 speeds about a year ago. I didn't ride it much, but recently i've noticed that when I start pedalling harder, the gear sometimes shifts to a higher gear without me adjusting it. I tried adjusting the screws on the speed changer thing, but nothing improved. Is there something wrong? Any help is appreciated :D
