Geographic distribution of plants?

Why is it that plants such as cactus only grow in one particular region (North America) whereas deserts in all the other continents don't have them despite that the climates and latitudes are very similar? If the cactus is introduced to a desert in Africa, let's say, would it start to become endemic?
